Fire Breathing Lizards - A Lego League Robotics Team
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a worldwide robotics program for 9- to 16-year-olds designed to get children excited about science and technology. The Fire Breathing Lizards is a local Crofton robotics team, competing in Maryland’s FLL robotic games since 2010. Last year the team was featured in Suburban Scene and placed 2nd in Research Presentation at the FIRST Lego League Qualifier Tournament at the Universities at Shady Grove in 2011.
The South River Power Hawks, another local robotics team, proudly sponsors our team. For the 2012 season, we will be competing in the Senior Solutions robotic games. The FLL competition not only includes the research project and presentation but also designing, building, and programming a robot (using Lego Mindstorm™ NXT software). Our robot ‘Fire Fang’ is programmed to retrieve items and maneuver various senior-related devices during the competition. With help from our Senior Lizard Advisor Hal and Dr. Jane Galbreath, a physical therapist, we have been working on research related to balance problems faced by seniors. We are certain that our invention will improve the lives of many senior citizens. On December 17 we performed our solution to several professional staffers at the South River Health & Rehabilitation Center in Edgewater, Maryland. Our Maryland State qualifier this year will take place on January 5 at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland. We hope you will come out and cheer us on.
The Fire Breathing Lizards are: Coach Dawn Hite, Dean Kyle, Nikhita Pamidala, Jimmy Selby, Jaeden Ware, and Nailah Ware. All the lizards are STEM students (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in our local Crofton schools. Good luck LIZARDS!!!
