16 Hopefuls Apply for County Executive Seat
The Anne Arundel County Council will interview applicants and make a selection on Feb. 21.

There were zero on Wednesday and five on Thursday, but by the noon deadline on Friday, 16 candidates had filled out applications to be the next Anne Arundel county executive.
The following list of applicants was provided by Anne Arundel County Council's administrative officer Elizabeth Jones:
- Tom Angelis, former executive candidate
- Phil Bissett, former state delegate
- David Cordle, former Annapolis alderman
- Ingrid Dean
- Kendel Ehrlich, former first lady of Maryland
- Ron Elfenbein, former state senate candidate for District 30
- John Gary, former county executive
- John R. Hammond, acting county executive
- Rick Hoover, a Glen Burnie resident
- Patrick Jameson, former state trooper
- Curtis Kingsland, an Odenton resident
- Laura Neuman
- Steven R. Schuh, delegate from Pasadena representing District 31
- Millard T. Snowden Sr., a Glen Burnie resident.
- James Wilhelm, former congressional candidate for District 3
- Derick Young
Five of the candidates were at a forum in Odenton on Thursday night, and Patch has video footage of each making their pitch for the position.
The council is scheduled to interview applicants and select a new county executive at 7 p.m. on Feb. 21. The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live. For information on your local government channel, check the Anne Arundel County website.

I see Phil Bissett is running. This is a pretty scary thought. How can he run for office when he doesn't pay his bills? He still owes my husband $700 for some excavating work my husband did for him a couple years ago.

I thin John Hammond should get the post. He is the least political and the most dedicated public "servant" amongst all the candidates. He knows the countys business better than anyone and he is well aware of the duties of government to serve the common good.

No, we dont. What we need is a County Executive that knows the responsibilities connected with his office, require frugel use of power and respect for all people who have to live in a community. Far too long, AA has been catering to special interest gangs and money. The casino at Arundel Mills is a will never deliver on the PUBLIC PROMISES of money and operating responsbilities.

According to the Capital this morning if Hammond gets it he is going to appoint 2 people to do the job he has been doing. Let's keep him where he is and save some money

So far the women in govt on local and state levels have not produced better government. In fact, they have succumbed to failed policies of their husbands or the GOP which favors small impotent inefective govt . The Party faithful talk a good game but nationally, we know the GOP has done great harm to the economy with false promises of spending money wisely, then showering their political cronies with government contracts and favors. Bob Ehrlich failed to govern, his policies weakened government and he tried to divest unwisely commong good assets. We the people have a right to safety in our neighborhoods, good schools for all our children, access to clean water focus on cleaning up the rivers and tribs for outselves and future generations.

Shannon….and I suppose you have personal knowledge of Ms Ehrlich's frugality and knowledge of the issues at hand? She strikes me as someone who really is out of touch with the 'common man'. Personally I have nothing against her….I just do not think she is the best pick for this job. She is the only candidate for the position who showed up with a 'handler' while saying she would not use the police detail because she can drive herself to events.

Steve Schuh has the vote lock stock and barrel by his business partner and campaign manager D. Fink of the county council. Surely his other partners, Larry Ray, Gary Koch, Mr Bloomingfield, etc will throw some of their weight around and ensure he gets in, like he and Fink ensured permits and zoning fr them.

What's the matter Margie are you afraid some conservatives might be horning in on the Owens empire of zoning and permits. How come we never heard any complaints about Janet Owens and her misuse of zoning and permits, and all of the other departments within Anne Arundel County. Are you concerned they might try to misappropriate taxpayers funds for say maybe, another unprofitable golf course, that Anne Arundel County taxpayers will have to bail out. Same old story, same old song and dance.

There were lots of complaints about the way Janet Owens failed to deliver on her promises of "controlled responsible growth". She used her SOUTH COUNTY heritage to advance special interests and allowed irresponsible growth. By the way the "Economic Development Committee" is a work around the US CONSTITUTION that does not allow direct TAXPAYER dollars to be used to ADVANCE private enterprises. CORPORATE monopoly of markets is just as dangerous to democracy as any foreign enemies. After all, we are growing them here in the US by replacing an effective government, with SMALL impotent government with unequal and infrequent justice. THE MD public service commission, the SEC, The FCC have failed to protect the common good and safeguard real competition in our economy.

Janet Owens was responsible for the fiasco with Riverdale Baptist Church that cost the taxpayers millions of dollars in litigation and court settlements. In attempting to block that church from building an upper school right next door to her family farm, she used the county law office and the county council to do her bidding. And once the dust settled the county was ordered to pay $3.25 million to the church….out of our pockets, baby.

Hammond was part of the administration this past year, not just a budget guy. He was part of the misconduct along with Robey and Hodgson. Ehrlich might make a good state senator, but she lacks the credible business and executive experience. We need to encourage council to vote for the most qualified person. The forum Thursday night demonstrated that none of the "real" applicants would retain any of Leopold's crownies, nor would they pary favors for anyone. The slinging about personal finances and debts owed is sad. I suspect that applicants are not going to be shy about throwing stones in these comment arenas ($700 comment person has a different alias in the Capital). There are a few applicants obviously willing to step over the good sportsmanship line and break Reagans commandment for personal gain.

That person who is owed this money should have taken it to a judge a long time ago. Besides, council turned down Bissett during the last appointment he applied for and the citizens rejected him now 5 times in a row. Let him fade w/ dignity.
