BOYS BASKETBALL: Arundel Rebounds, Sets School Wins Record

Coming off their first loss of the season, the Wildcats moved past South River, 79-50. They will prepare for the District V Championship game next week, then the state playoffs.

EDGEWATER—The Arundel High boys basketball team didn't take too long to get back in the win column after suffering its first loss of the season.

Rebounding from a last-second loss to Old Mill on Tuesday, the Wildcats used a stingy defense and strong inside game to trounce South River 79-50 in the regular season finale.

“Sometimes a loss helps you reflect,” Arundel head coach Jeff Starr said. “Hopefully we learned something from [the Old Mill] game, and tonight we showed we can bounce back and we move forward.”

Junior forward Dexter Dunbar led all Arundel scorers with 14 points, his highest output of the season. Twelve Wildcats scored at least one point.

Arundel took control early, jumping out to a 40-20 halftime lead. South River cut the deficit to 13 midway through the third period, but Arundel responded with a strong fourth quarter, led by Dunbar's eight points.

“We came out with a vengeance,” Dunbar said. “Anything to help the team out, I was willing to do.”

With the win, Arundel (21-1) set a school record for victories in a season. It will play Centennial in the District V Championship game next Wednesday. The MPSSAA Class 4A playoffs will follow, and the team will learn its seed and draw this Sunday.

“Everyone talked to me about the dream season, but the dream season for me is a state championship,” Starr said. “Right now we’re having a good season, and starting next week, everyone will be at zero and zero.”

NOTES: Junior guard Keaton Mack and sophomore forward Darien Bryant each scored eight points for Arundel … South River’s Dre Bell and Kellen Brooks each scored 14 points … South River finished 6-16 on the year.
