Police ID Crofton Teen as Morning Crash Victim
Police said icy roads may have been a factor in the crash that killed 18-year-old Alexis Lewis in Gambrills.

Anne Arundel County Police have confirmed the identity of the victim in a crash Thursday morning in Gambrills, and said icy roads may have contributed to the accident.
Police said 18-year-old Alexis Lewis of Crofton died when her pickup truck collided with a cement truck on Waugh Chapel Drive. The impact of the crash ejected her from the truck and she died on the scene.
The crash happened at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
According to an account of the accident provided by police, Lewis was driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup in the eastbound lane of Waugh Chapel Road, approaching the Village at Waugh Chapel shopping center. As she approached Silver Way, she lost control of the truck at a curve in the road, forcing the truck to turn counterclockwise, eventually striking a cement truck in the opposite lane.
The driver of the cement truck was not hurt.
Police said that a preliminary investigation suggest icy and wet roads may have been a factor in the crash.
The fatal accident was one of dozens of crashes Thursday as motorists struggled with road conditions. Police said that between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday, there were more than 60 accidents reported in the county.

I believe they spelled it wrong in the article, its Lewis. They got the vehicle wrong as well, it was a chevy suv not a truck . She was on her way to work and was a very dear friend of ours, so sad. Prayers to her family.

Dan, Thanks for weighing in as a friend of this young woman who left us too soon. I hope she is remembered well by all who loved her, and that people will step up and help support those who will be raising her son. Maybe this is one place where you can let members of the community know how we can help.
FYI, sometimes SUVs are referred to as 'light trucks'.

Regarding the truck, the information we have from police was that it was a Chevy S-10 Extreme. But I did not see the vehicle personally.

I will absolutely let this site know, when a fundraiser gets set up or if help is needed in anyway. It all hasn't sunk in that she's gone yet, she was just at our house picking up her son my daughters watched for her wed.evening. So hard to believe that she's here one day and gone the next.

It sounds like perhaps she wasn't wearing her seatbelt. That normally seems to be the case when someone is ejected from a vehicle. There's no mention of this in the story, but quite possible she might have survived had she not been ejected. I'm not trying to blame the victim, just hoping her tragedy might save the life of someone else. Seatbelts do save lives.

Traffic detour control by AA County Police up until at least 11 AM certainly left a lot to be desired. They blocked the entire entry to westbound Waugh Chapel Road from the 3 left turn lanes coming from northbound Route 3, making all vehicles turn onto Route 3 south into traffic from eastbound Waugh Chapel Road turning right with a green traffic light. They should have either blocked the northbound route 3 left turn lanes, or allowed the left turn traffic to proceed onto Waugh Chapel as far as the Village entrance or the entry to senior housing across from the village. Both dangerous and idiotic!

The accident was right in front of my daughter's school. I feel like it could of happened to any one of us. The roads were so icy and AA co schools should have been delayed! So sorry for the family's loss.....my prayers are with you all.

Roads were horrible! I felt a few icy patches that morning while driving my daughter to high school, and I was one of the slower drivers. When my son's bus driver picked him up a half hour after I came back from taking my daughter, I said to him, "You know it's icy out here, right, please be careful." I cannot stop thinking about how tragic this is. The roads should have been treated.

My heart is sad for this family. I was traveling Eastbound on Waugh Chapel yesterday.... At about 7:35 I was rounding that same curve when my car began to slide into oncoming traffic. I was able to correct and proceeded to my appointment more carefully.
I cry every time I pass the accident site as I realize it could have been me. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Terrible to here. I live on Vacation Dr right off Indian Summer dr on my way to work. I hit that same patch of ice at 5am that morning heading towards Rt 3. The same exact thing happen to me =\. The Ice pulled me over to the opposite side of the road, there was no oncoming traffic at 5am. I posted on FB that there was Ice on Waugh chapel rd around 5:30 and that it pulled me. I'm sorry this happen. It is so sad. My prayers go to the family and friends.
