Young Author Wins First Place for Story
Kira McGuire is a second-grader whose story was selected from more than 100 entries.
"Picture Day" was the winner among the short stories written by second-graders and reviewed by the Anne Arundel County Reading Council.
Kira McGuire, a second-grader at Nantucket Elementary School, wrote the story that was selected from more than 100 entries. Kira was the only student from a Crofton school selected as a winner in the contest for grades two through 12.
Judges used a rubric to score entries, noting originality and creativity, according to a release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS).
Kira and all of the elementary school winners will be honored at a reception on March 10 at College Parkway Baptist Church in Arnold. The second-place winner for short stories in second grade was Jacob Spitzer of Cape St. Claire Elementary School in Annapolis.
First-place winners at each grade level—including Kira's story—will be submitted to the State of Maryland International Reading Association for the statewide Young Authors Contest, according to AACPS.

I believe another Crofton Kid---Meghan Jackson, a CWES alum and a current Bates PVA 6th grader---won for her short story, as well.
