Jogger Reports Attempted Robbery in Crofton

A 23-year-old woman told police that a man came up behind her Friday morning and demanded she hand over her phone.

A jogger reported to police that a man attempted to rob her early Friday morning in Crofton, authorities said.

According to a news release from Anne Arundel County police, officers responded at 1:08 a.m. to the 1400 block of Vineyard Court and spoke to a 23-year-old woman who said she was struck from behind while jogging in the area.

The woman told police that a man grabbed her from behind, put his arms around her neck and said he needed her phone. The woman got away from the man and told him that she didn’t have a phone.

Police said the man ran away toward the 2300 block of Nantucket Drive. Officers searched the area, but did not find the suspect.

Joe, I was thinking the same thing. I mean nobody deserves to be robbed or worse, and we should feel safe (in a relatively small town of Crofton) to walk around anywhere and whenever we want. But in reality this day in age, I question those, especially female, as to why they would be out...alone walking or running at 1:00am...by yourself.

Sounds like she needed an alibi in writing or she seriously lacks attention.

Was this the "real" Crofton, inside the triangle or the area that we know as Gambrills but they always call Crofton? I totally agree with all comments that, in this day and age, no one jogs, walks or goes out in the neighborhood at 1am...personally I would report them as suspicious and call the police on the jogger! I would consider anyone running or jogging at 1am to be suspicious!

This "real" Crofton comment is actually comical. And the responses to it are entertaining, as well. Everything beyond that comment became invisible to the readers. And the value of the comment was...? I'm simply wondering if the "real" Crofton is immune to illegal activities because of its "elite" status...

Before lacing up her jogging shoes, she should have taken a few seconds to think about who she might be sharing the streets with during that time frame??

She should count herself lucky that this did not turn out a whole lot worse and view it as a good life lesson. Even though I live in a very nice neighborhood in Crofton, if my wife told me she was going out for a jog at 1:00 AM on a Friday night in the middle of the Summer, I would call 911 and ask for an ambulance, convinced she was either having a stroke or had just fallen and hit her head.

Seriously though, I hope she is OK. More importantly, I hope she NEVER does something like that again.

I hope she is okay. I appreciate that Anne Arundel County Police Department keeps us informed, especially since this happened two blocks from where we live. Thank you Anne Arundel County Police Department for protecting our section of Crofton, and for your reassuring presence to prevent further violence after Christopher was killed.

Like did rose really have to make the "real" Crofton statement? I ran into someone saying that in their 60's I think. Eventually that old generation will be gone and change will run its course alittle faster. You can't stop change. Even downtown Bethesda isn't immune to crime just because its nice. Some people are gonna do what they do, just be prepared before you go. Mace, razor blade, personal alarm siren, dog, etc....

Joe - Please call BS on me too then. I jog every night - in Crofton between 12:30 and 2. Pardon me for working a shift that differs from the traditional 9-5. Two times, I have called in suspicious activity I observed during one of these "insane" runs.

C. Sullivan-Smith - She lacked so much attention that she got away. Kudos to the runner for evading her assailant.

Rose - please call the cops on me next time. I will make sure my routes go through the "older and less well maintained part of Crofton - aka the Triangle" as well as the newer neighborhoods with well manicured lawns and exteriors.

Dave - let your wife step out from your control once in a while.

Laura and Elizabeth - Thank you for some sanity.

"Haters gonna hate."

I, for one, will continue to run, and will keep a vigilant eye while the rest of you sane people sleep warm and cozy in your beds.

Kelly,
I don't think it is a good idea for a woman to jog alone at 1am. I am glad she is ok. But I a sorry the police couldn't find her attacker. He'll do it again and I hope nobody gets hurt.
What about a treadmill or even cheaper an exercise cd ?

As far as this nonsense about Gambrills vs. Crofton I don't get it. I bought a house in Chapman Farm when we moved from the Midwest. My address says Crofton. So when we were victims of vandalism I called the Crofton police. Only then did I know we weren't in the special tax district. The county police responded and were very helpful. Old Crofton, New Crofton, Gambrills, who cares ? We're all in this together. Let's look out for one another. Report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities !

I went out for a jog one night around 11 pm. I think I ran about 1/4 of a mile before I realized that wasn't such a smart idea - and turned back around. Sometimes, in this day and age, you need to "get away" on a fly. I have kids so I really needed to de-stress at that moment. It just so happened to be at 11pm. As for the ignorant comment about Gambrills or Crofton - I live in close proximity to the Crofton library, you know where the lawns are all maintained and manicured? And when the sun rests, it's dark as hell!!! The bushes and trees acts as hiding spaces for someone to jump out on you. I'm a creative spirit, so I don't let society's rules and regulations cage my soul. Additionally, Jason - I used to work 4pm to 12am, so I understand your life completely!!! I'm glad she was able to get away! Don't judge people!!!!

What is up with this " real Crofton" comment from Rose? Here's my reply. Needless and unfounded snob. It's Crofton, not Embassy Row.

Uh the Triangle is different from Gambrills pa lease! Not a snob comment just a comment meant to determine location! There is a difference whether one likes it or not!

Jason - a guy jogging at 1 AM is not the same as a 23 year old girl jogging at 1 AM. Regardless of the shift - a 23 year old girl should be smarter than to jog at 1 AM. By 'real Crofton' they mean in the triangle - meaning you live in the old crappy Levitt homes and before anybody gets their panties in a wad - I know of which I speak because I live in the 'T' section. All the 'real' Crofton (meaning the special tax district) affords you is the opportunity to pay more taxes, live near lots of old cranky original 'Croftonites', have to drive slower around the parkway, and have the Deputy Dawg police force. :-)

Perhaps the comment "real Crofton" was a poor choice of words but in no way was it meant to be prejudice as some of the comments made here have been regarding the "triangle". Sad but true prejudice has many ugly heads and some have been shown here. I personally would like to know the area where the "attack" happened and saying simply "Crofton" tells me, and most of us, nothing. If one cannot understand that then so be it. Personal attacks on opinions does nothing but inflame and produce more prejudice opinions. jmho Naming a community is not degrading that community it simply identifies where the event happened and, believe me, it happens in ALL Communities even "gated" ones......

Does anyone even know what Crofton P.D. exists; three brand new cruisers which we pay for and no po-po to drive them...all Croftonites should really rethink the value of having three cruisers parked at town hall.
