VIDEO: Preakness Hats You Won't Believe

Feathers, bows and sequins, oh my!

For some ladies attending the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, the hats are more important than the horses. Last year, Patch visited Hats in the Belfry on Main Street in Annapolis to see what was fashionable in the world of hats. This year, Marjae Hicks is busy adorning Baltimore area heads with feathers, jewels, bows, sequins, flowers and all the bling that is associated with a Preakness hat. The Preakness is one of Baltimore's historical sports events, offering tradition and excitement. And big hats. According to Marjae, owner of Hats by Marjae in Westminster, MD, Preakness-worthy hats are big and whimsical and will get people talking. "You have to wear your hat with confidence. Hundreds of people came out for Saturday's Festival on the Green at the Crofton Country Club.

The weather was a littly chilly, but hundreds of locals made it out for the Festival on the Green on Saturday. Held at the Crofton Country Club and presented by the Crofton Chamber of Commerce, the event feature numerous vendors, plenty of food, live music and lots of fun. Last Chance: Be a Local Country Music Star

Radio station WMZQ, 98.7 FM, is hosting a battle of the bands. To be a contestant submit your band's video by noon on Friday.

The country music station WMZQ, 98.7 FM, is hosting a Battle of the Bands contest that ends at noon on Friday. To enter, submit a YouTube link to a video of your band to the contest site that is no longer than four minutes. Be sure to read the rules. "Six bands will be chosen to perform on May 3rd or May 17th at Growler's in Gaithersburg and compete for the chance to open the day at WMZQ Fest on June 3rd!" according to the contest's website.  Read more, including the contest rules at the WMZQ contest page.  From the looks of the Facebook comments, a Maryland band called The Sam Grow Band, which frequents such establishments as The Whiskey in Annapolis, seems to be a popular contestant so far. Crofton Woods Elementary Receives Arts Education Award

The school was one of three in the state to receive the honor for an excellent arts education program and creative learning environment.

Crofton Woods Elementary was recently recognized by the Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance Inc. (AEMS) for its outstanding efforts to incorporate the arts into the learning environment. The school was one of three public schools in the state to receive the Maryland School of Excellence in Arts Education Award, according to a release. The award is presented to schools with art programs that include the following characteristics: The Crofton Woods Elementary website features a link to more than 3,000 samples of students' art projects on Artsonia, along with a PDF that shows China art, painted rain barrels, shadow puppets, and symmetrical art projects. Arundel Grad Wanda Sykes Dishes on Comedy, NSA

The comedian, who grew up in Gambrills, will perform in North Bethesda Friday. She recently offered some details about growing up locally and holding a top secret security clearance.

Arundel High School graduate Wanda Sykes once had a pretty good job at the National Security Agency, but left it at age 27 to pursue a career in comedy. It has paid off, as she has become well-known for her standup shows and roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Age and other programs and films. She's back in the area this week with a show at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. Sykes, who grew up in Gambrills, spoke this week with the Washington Post Express and offered some details on her life as a procurement officer at the NSA and her decision to leave. PHOTOS: Battle of the Bands at Maryland Hall

There was a lot riding on 15-minute performances by high school bands as part of the 14th annual Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands.

Nancy Almgren, founder and organizer of the Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands, said she loves to see the students of all different musical genres and schools come together every year. "Where else are you going to get kids from every part of the county?" Almgren asked Saturday night during the 14th annual event at Maryland Hall. This year's competition featured students from public and private schools, including Strobe Otters from Annapolis High School, August of One from The Key School and Plan C from Indian Creek High School. Ashley Forrest Accepted into Country Music Association

Nashville recording artist Ashley Forrest hit the studio this month in the Volunteer State and was accepted into the Country Music Association.

Croftonite Ashley Forrest headed to the Tennessee to work on several music and entertainment projects in early January. The Nashville recording artist and her manager, Jim Pierce, were busy building the background necessary for a CD release, according to a release from Ashley Forrest Music. Forrest also met with entertainment industry experts to discuss how to market the Arundel High School alumna’s music. She signed a contract to start her own publishing company called “Ashley Forrest Music Publishing.” She was accepted into the Country Music Association. According to the release, Ashley will need to return to Nashville on a regular basis.

Crofton Man Writes About ‘Pursuing the Sunrise’

Croftonite Ajibade Jegede shares his inspiration behind his book of Christian poetry.

Ajibade Jegede dedicates his time to mentoring fathers in the All Pro Dads program and ministering to the community through Power of One Ministries. His ministry is extending beyond the church and into his new book Pursuing the Sunrise. “I started writing poetry when I was in college,” Jegede said in an email. “Poetry helped me discover my passion for writing, and after I became just as passionate about being like Jesus, my poetry took on a distinct Christian tone." The father of two said he had written so much that he eventually had a manuscript on his hands. “Suddenly God burdened me to write this book,” Jegede said. Arundel Sends 12 to All-County Concert Band

The students will perform on Feb. 4 at Meade High School along with other top musicians in the county.

3 Arundel Musicians Head to All-County Jazz Band

Arundel High will host the best student jazz performers from the county on Feb. 18.

The following was submitted by Steve Barrett of the Arundel Instrumental Music Association. Three musicians from Arundel High School earned spots in the 2011-2012 Anne Arundel County Public Schools All-County Jazz Band, following auditions held Dec. 19 at Arundel High School in Gambrills. Earning positions were junior trumpeter Victoria Banos, junior alto saxophonist Larnell Thomas, and sophomore vibes player Alex Proctor. All three musicians are making their first appearance with the All-County Jazz Band. Victoria was selected to the All-County Concert Band last year.
