Here's a look at early voting results in Anne Arundel County.
The results of early voting in Anne Arundel County were announced Tuesday evening. More than 37,000 people took part in early voting prior to Election Day in the county. Democrats including President Barack Obama and Sen. Ben Cardin performed well, but voters also came out strong against an expanded gambling measure. Here's a look at the early voting results in key races. These votes will be combined with Election Day totals, which are expected later Tuesday and Wednesday. UPDATED (2:26 a.m.)—Same-sex marriage is the law in Maryland. The passage of the controversial law was the biggest win among a list of six other statewide ballot questions including the DREAM Act, expanded gambling and congressional redistricting that all also passed. Gov. Martin O'Malley took to the podium to address the Question 6 victory party at The Soundstage in Baltimore early Wednesday to chants of his last name. O'Malley thanked the crowd for all they had done "in this noble battle to move Maryland Forward." Voters in Maryland on Tuesday gave the state's 10 electoral votes to Barack Obama.
Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Maryland. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. Thousands of people proudly voted on Tuesday. Show off your stickers!
It's just a sticker, but it feels good to wear it, doesn't it? All around town, voters proudly walked around with their 'I Voted' stickers clinging to their shirts. We saw seniors sticking them to their sweaters and young kids sticking them to their noses. (Yes, we know the youngsters didn't actually vote, but give them credit for waiting in line patiently with Dad or Mom.) From Odenton to Crofton to Severn, voters reported wait times of an hour or more.
Residents of west Anne Arundel County reported long lines at polling centers Tuesday morning, with some prospective voters deciding to come back later in the day. Centers in Odenton, Crofton and Gambrills had packed parking lots, while voters in Severn said they waited more than 90 minutes during the morning rush. At Waugh Chapel Elementary School, voters sat in their cars and waited for voters to exit. One man said he waited about an hour to vote. But then he pointed to a long line near the school's entrance. Patch caught up with Delegate Cathy Vitale outside of Severna Park Middle School on Election Day.
State delegate and Severna Park native Cathy Vitale (R-District 33A) was outside Severna Park Middle School on Election Day morning—but she wasn’t waiting to cast her vote. Vitale, a Republican, said she actually voted early and was spending Election Day around the polls talking with voters. Throughout the county, early voting numbers skewed heavily towards Democrats, something Vitale said surprised her. “I was surprised by the numbers,” she said. “Last election, Republicans came out heavily in early voting. History suggests that if President Obama wins Maryland's electoral votes, he'll be getting most of his support from elsewhere in the state.
Barack Obama secured Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on the way to winning the presidency in 2008, but his strongest support in the state was found outside Anne Arundel County. Voters in the county actually supported Republican candidate Sen. John McCain by a narrow margin, with 129,682 votes for McCain and about 125,015 for Obama. A review of the results shows that Obama garnered his strongest support in most of West Anne Arundel County and the Annapolis area, while McCain won the areas of Pasadena, Severna Park and south county. Obama earned very strong support in precincts in Brooklyn Park, Severn and Glen Burnie, but voting was generally split in other parts of north county. The congressman is expected to add Crofton to his district if he wins the general election Tuesday.
At various times throughout 30-year career, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-5th District) has represented Crofton. Hoyer will represent Crofton again if voters approve the new redistricting plan, and he took time to speak with business owners and residents in town on Monday. Hoyer is also favored to win re-election against Republican challenger Tony O'Donnell on Tuesday. “I’m just saying hello, and letting them know they’re back in my district,” Hoyer said as he spent time with voters at the Crofton Bowling Centre. Hoyer also stopped by the Crofton Depot carryout and Tomorrow's Treasures quilt shop.
