Chesapeake Chorale performs Brahm's "Ein Deutsches Requiem"
The Chesapeake Chorale presents Brahm’s “Ein deutsches Requiem” on Saturday, May 12th at 8 pm at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, 15200 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715. Hailed as one of the most beloved choral works of all time, we are performing a special arrangement of it by the composer for Chorus, Soloists and Piano Four-Hands. Steeped in the Protestant tradition, Brahms turned to Martin Luther's translation of the Bible for his text rather than the traditional Roman Catholic mass. Absent are depictions of judgment and eternal damnation. Instead, this is a spirit-filled work offering consolation for those left behind. Brahms had begun thinking about a memorial work following the death of his friend, Robert Schumann. Upon the death of his mother, he began in earnest on the Requiem.
