Farmers Markets Set to Open for Spring

Local Farmers Markets Bring In Spring Crop and Customers

As spring flowers begin to pop up, so do many local farmers markets. During the early spring is a great time to visit when the harvest of fresh asparagus and strawberries bear the first crop of the year.

Locally grown produce is fresh and usually more flavorful than produce that has been grown out of state and shipped into markets.

Fresh produce is not all that can be found at the various farmers markets; many include items such as plants, herbs, baked goods, jams and jellies. The Westfield Annapolis location often carries fresh eggs, bison and breads.

“I love taking my children to the Bowie market after church on Sundays. It is full of Eastern Shore produce,” says Crofton mother Rachael Davis. She adds “Sometimes someone is selling Cream of Crab soup – it is wonderful!”

Owner of Roundz Catering and Patch contributor says his favorite farmers market purchase is asparagus. He explains that it is packed with lots of good things including Vitamin K, folic acid and Vitamin C among others. Besides being a powerhouse of vitamins it is very easy to prepare.

“My favorite asparagus preparation is grilling. Asparagus has a flavor that will stand up to anything, including a roll on the grill,” said Pope.

The Crofton resident says first simply rinse the spears and place them in a plastic bag with vegetable oil and seasoning (preferably curry powder or fresh thyme and always with a healthy dose of garlic!). Once the spears are coated, grill them for about 4 minutes.

Pope goes on to say, “The next day, any leftovers can be chopped and added to a salad. It’s simple, healthy and delicious. Enjoy!”

“I love buying fresh vegetables for my family. I think they taste better and are less expensive than a grocery store,” said Laura Miller of Gambrills.

Miller also  visits the Annapolis market.

“I also think you get a much better variety than at the store,” Miller added
