Back To School Savings: Pace Yourselves!

Bekah Walsh provides tips on how to maximize your back to school budget potential.

Back in the day, I was one of those weird kids: I LOVED back to school shopping. Though I dreaded the day I had to actually set foot back in school, I loved browsing around for cute pens and folders (not to mention clothes and shoes!).

Looking back, it probably wasn't as fun for my parents to do so every year. My mom was smart enough to stock up on basics like notebook paper, but for the most part we were typical one-stop-shoppers. Well, with wallets now getting tighter all around, this may be the most convenient strategy, but it certainly isn't the most frugal. If you can take the time to pace yourselves, these few tips can certainy stretch the back to school budget a little further:

  • Don't think you're too good for the dollar store: I STILL shop there for certain basics. Dollar Tree in Crofton started stocking school supplies awhile ago, and some items at $1 can be a steal.
  • Watch the circulars; Yes, it takes more time, but stores like Office Depot and Staples often offer certain items nearing back to school time that rival even Dollar Tree: last week I saw packs of notebook paper for a penny, and this week, pocket folders are the same price. Plan ahead and stock up when these deals are offered!
  • Remember this is tax-free week: Think of it as a 6% discount off of any clothing or shoes under $100. The discount is good on all apparel, so shop for the babies not in school, or splurge on yourself. Many stores, such as Kohl's offer sales on top of the tax free week (Kohl's cash starts tomorrow and coupons can often be found to use on top of the sale prices).

If you have the patience, then plan ahead and shop around for the most savings!
