(Updated 12:08 a.m.) — A crash involving at least five vehicles in the Gambrills area has resulted in the death of three people, and closed Route 3 southbound to traffic Tuesday evening.

Anne Arundel County Police said the road would be closed for several more hours as they investigated the crash, which took place shortly before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Route 3 and Route 32.

Lt. Russ Davies of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said two people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported that a third person also died.

Several news outlets reported that one of the victims was an 8-year-old girl.

Another six people were transported to area hospitals. A 20-year-old man was also sent to Shock Trauma by ambulance, and four other people were sent to Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Davies said initial reports indicate a flatbed truck may have collided with multiple cars near Route 3 and the Route 32 westbound ramp.

The identities of the victims in this crash have not been released. The crash remains under investigation.

The crash scene was expected to be cleared overnight and not impact the morning rush hour.
