Crofton Bike Doctor Prepares to Move

The bicycle store will move into a bigger space within the Village at Waugh Chapel in Gambrills.

It's customary to see shoppers on the move as they cycle in and out of . Soon though, the full-service bicycle store will be the one moving to a new location.

Currently located at 1312 Main Chapel Way, Bike Doctor will move into a larger location at 2616-A Chapel Lake Dr.

With construction on the new store beginning Friday, the move is expected to be completed within 30 to 60 days, according to Ernest Freeland, owner of Crofton Bike Doctor.

"It's a lot of hard work. The success is coming from the support of our customers, the support of my staff that makes this all possible," Freeland said.

Customers can expect more clothing space, including an expanded women's section, more biking accessories and a new kids' section. At the new location, kids will be able to "test ride" bikes inside the store.

Crofton Bike Doctor has been around for more than 20 years, serving the bicycling needs of greater Crofton, Gambrills area.

"We really appreciate the support and it's really all made possible because of them," Freeland said about the store's customers. "We love feedback from them about what they'd like to see us do more of and what we don't do well, because they're the true barometer of our success and our future."

Along with support of their customers, Freeland believes cycling is easy to pick up for beginners and that has contributed the success of the store as well.

"I think one reason that cycling is being so successful and is such a great activity is that it's relatively inexpensive to get into and it's a phenomenal family activity," he said.

Why is this called the Crofton bike doctor? It is located in Gambrills... thus reason it is located in the "the Village at Waugh Chapel in Gambrills" the same goes for Safeway, Target and all the other stores in this development. This really drives me crazy, if the owner of the Crofton bike doctor reads the Patch please explain your reasoning.

Justin, it is confusing for Patch editors as well since we don't have a Gambrills Patch and often share coverage of the area between Crofton and Odenton. Tim Lemke wrote an article last summer about some other businesses that say they're in Crofton: http://patch.com/A-k4zF

Personally I like the Boy's at Family Bike in Crofton. I'm a big guy and not a "Lance Armstong" type. When I walked into Bike Doctor I felt like I was bothering them. Family Bike treated me like their best customer from day one. 2 Road and 2 Mountain Bikes later I say Family Bike is the place to go.

Been dealing with the real Crofton bike business for over 15 years and that one is near the Crofton post office not at Waugh Chapel. Great people to deal with and stand in back of what they sell. One bike has now been passed down to 3rd grandchild.

I could not agree more! While in the New Target,a woman answered the phone "Crofton Target" . I ask her how she figured she was in crofton. She said we are in Crofton. I told he she needed to learn how to read a map! If you look at a map it's it's surrounded by Gambrillis, but I think it's really Odenton! The people in Piney Orchard do the same thing. They tell you they live in crofton.I was born and raised in Odenton and proud of it. If you want to live in Crofton move there!

sensitive people.... they go by crofton because if you ask a person who lives anywhere outside of the Gambrills/Odenton/Crofton area where Gambrills is at they'll have no idea ( I work nearly an hour away, nobody knows where Gambrills is but they all know where Crofton is located).... so from a business perspective if you tell a potential customer come to the Gambrills Bike Doctor or the Gambrills Target many will have no idea where it is and won't know that its a short drive for them. Tell somebody in Glen Burnie that "They have that bike in stock and assembled at the Crofton Bike Doctor", or "that tv is in stock at the Crofton Target" they'll instantly know where that store is and will know that it isn't too much trouble to head to that business (not being from around here they won't have a clue about Michigan U turns!!) On the subject of Bike Doctor itself we have purchased bikes from them for our entire family and more than once... kids bikes, mountain bikes, dirt bikes, Hybrids and even a triathlon bike. Bike Doctor has been great no matter what type of bike we are purchasing and the lifetime free tune-ups are great, we have had the bikes tuned up over the years with no issues. I'm glad to see them having the need for a bigger space in an economic time that a lot of businesses are struggling.

Justin - When I bought the business over 8 years ago it was already named Crofton Bike Doctor. Since the name was established I debated changing it but ultimately decided not to. As someone said in another post I think that "Crofton" is recognized as a larger community then the zip code represents and offers people a better idea of the general area. I am proud of being a part of the Odenton, Gambrills, Crofton and surrounding communities. - Ernest Freeland

The point is that there is a person who has gone to grade school in Crofton and still resides in Crofton. He has owned the bike shop in Crofton and works there everyday with his wife. If someone in Glen Burnie was looking for a bike doctor which is a franchise or chain they would find one on Ritchie Highway or Arnold much closer than Crofton. Just don 't confuse the bike store that was known as the Crofton bike shop before the Waugh Chapel shopping center was built

Being in Gambrills makes them no less a part of the greater Crofton Community. Heck I live in a community on Reidel that called Crofton Farms and is a 21054 zip code. Ernest and his staff have sold us 6 bike over the last few years and never once has it felt like a chain store. More importantly they have serviced the same bikes with honesty and integrity. They have even held bike safety sessions for my cub scouts. If calling themselves "Crofton" helps more people find this great store, good for them. Good Store, Great People, Excellent addition to the Community. I assume that anyone that has a problem with the name "Crofton Bike Doctor" also wants the Landover Redskins.
