Cupcake Shop to Park Itself in Crofton

Angelette Aviles has always enjoyed taking her baked delights on the road, but now she’s ready to settle in a bit. 

Aviles will bring her cupcake cooking talents to Crofton later this month, as she opens the first retail location of Cupcake Blvd. 

The new store is scheduled to open Dec. 15 at 1117 Route 3 North, Suite 104, in Gambrills in the shopping center alongside Vuong’s martial arts and Dickey’s Barbeque.

Until now, Cupcake Blvd. was largely a road show, as Aviles manned a Nissan truck and sold cupcakes to busy officer workers in Silver Spring, Rockville and Bethesda. She also rented space inside the Roundz Gourmet, baking cupcakes in the morning. 

“It just kind of evolved by word of mouth,” Aviles said in a recent interview as she prepared the new retail space. “When people started calling me for orders, I said ‘well, I better go all the way.’”

Cupcake Blvd. goes beyond your normal chocolate and vanilla. Aviles cranks out about 40 flavors ranging from red velvet to peanut butter cup and even maple bacon (it’s supposed to taste like breakfast).

Aviles plans to rotate about a dozen flavors each day and introduce seasonal cupcakes, such as gingerbread and peppermint pattie. 

"There's a demand for this," she said. "People are calling, and there's really no bakery around here."

With little formal culinary training, Aviles began experimenting with baking while living in Florida, where she worked in public relations. When she relocated back to Crofton, she found that baking could offer a fresh start. She enrolled in a few cooking classes to master some techniques, but has mostly relied on her own creativity and sweet tooth.

Aviles plans to employ about eight people, and will get some help from family and friends, including her 16-year-old son. 

Cupcake Blvd. will be open Wednesday through Sunday, from late morning into the evening. Meanwhile, Aviles still plans to operate the truck several days a week—it is a walking billboard, after all.
