Franklin's Produce Open for Business

Rick Franklin, owner of Franklin's Lawn and Garden downsized his company and moved the business to a new location in the median of Rt. 3 at St. Stephens Church Road.

Nothing is better than the fresh summer vegetables that are plentiful this time of year. Summer sweet corn, fresh tomatoes, succulent melons, and peaches--these items become plentiful here in the months of July and August.

Franklin's Produce is back in business. Originally started in the 1940’s alongside a much less busier Rt. 3, the Franklin family is again providing top-notch produce right here in town. Located in the median of Rt. 3 at St. Stephens Church Road, Rick Franklin searches the area for the best local produce to sell at his stand.

“All of the produce I sell comes from local Anne Arundel County farms or from the eastern shore,” Franklin shared.

The stand is still a family affair. With Rick at the helm, his wife Karen, his cousin Ann Fontz and her son Denny Sawyer run the stand this summer.

Rick Franklin is the owner of Franklin’s Lawn and Garden that was previously located on Rt. 3 north next to Leo’s Vacation Center. After his company had to downsize, he moved the business to this location. Franklin’s offers garden supplies; small equipment rental; and the cheapest propane tank refill in town!

“I knew when I moved the business to this location that I would reopen my family’s produce stand,” Franklin shared. He also shared that the road was way too busy for people to stop for produce in the old location.

Franklin shared one of his favorite summer time recipes with me. Stop by and buy some fresh corn and try it for yourself!

Fried corn and onions

4 ears fresh corn
2 tablespoons butter
1 small sweet onion, diced
Salt and pepper to taste

Boil corn for 5-7 minutes. Cut corn kernels from cob. Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Saute the corn kernels just until tender, then mix in onion. Continue to saute until onion is just beginning to turn crispy. Season with salt and pepper.

Come out and support a local family business. Franklin’s Produce is open 7 days/week and will remain open through Halloween with pumpkins and fall produce. Rick shared, “I’ll stay open until the produce stops coming.”

Stop by and visit them Monday—Friday from 10-6; Saturdays 10-5; and Sundays 10-2.
