New Study Gives Hope to Crofton High Advocates

The county council approved a $750,000 study to look at school construction needs across the county.

The Anne Arundel County Council has approved a new study of school construction needs, giving some hope to those who have pushed for a new high school in Crofton.

While the the $750,000 from the supplemental budget would not focus solely on the Crofton area, supporters of a new high school told the Capital-Gazette that any new analysis of the school system's capital priorities could aid their cause.

MGT of America conducted a "Strategic Facilities Utilization Study" in 2005 and it has generally been used as a guide for prioritizing school construction projects. It was due to be updated two years from now. MGT would also perform the new study.

Residents have pushed for a high school in the Crofton area due to growing enrollment at Arundel and South River high schools. Residents are now pushing the school system to place a Crofton High school on its list of priority projects.

Last month, school officials said they envisioned the need for a new high school in the Crofton area eventually, but that current population figures suggest that Arundel High School won't be over capacity until 2017. South River is already at 104 percent capacity.
