Is a Replacement to Damon's Grill Coming Soon?

Patch asks readers what they'd like to see move into the Village at Waugh Chapel.

Not long after locals began clamoring for a replacement in the Village at Waugh Chapel in Gambrills. Although it's taken a year to lease the space, an official announcement about a new business could be made soon.

"We are working a lease there, negotiating a lease for that property," said Dicky Darrell, owner of Darrell Development, which oversees the former Damon's location. "Hopefully, it will be signed within 30 days."

Patch will keep you updated with any new information.

Several Damon's Grill locations closed down in the past year after the owner went bankrupt, according to the Restaurant Finance Monitor. The only Damon's restaurant left in Maryland is located in Waldorf.

Do you want to see another sports bar in its place? Should Damon's be replaced by a different style of restaurant?

Post your comment below and let us know what you'd like to see in that space.

Another sports bar would be fantastic. The closest one in the area that has decent food, has lots of TVs and shows all NFL games is Glory Days in Bowie.

I was sad to see Damon's go. My family loved the food and atmosphere. However, I knew it was in trouble when any time we went there, especially during regular dining hours on Fridays and Saturdays, there was no wait for a table. I actually don't know why Damon's didn't do better in this area. They had no real competition - possibly Longhorn in Bowie.

The food at Damon's had gone from ho-hum to not very good, I wasn't disappointed to see it go but suprised it has taken so long to get another establishment in place. I doubt it will be a sports bar with Greene Turtle opening soon. You want to make money in this area you need good food at decent prices and you better have a bar that can bring you in a happy hour crowd. Try getting a seat at any of the places around here that offer happy hour specials, you can't (4 seasons, Big Fish, Blue Dolphin are all packed for happy hour). Next on the suspect list of failures is going to be Italian Market, the food there has gone downhill since they opened and you can go in there and find the place nearly empty any day of the week, crazy thing is they have a great outdoor seating area over looking the pond yet it sits empty.... put a bar in I-Market, offer up some kind of happy hour on that patio and they'd be packed

This only applies to my taste in dining, but when I take my family out then I want to take my family out. That means full service dining. When I got to the Italian Market, it's for take out. Personally, I prefer Mamma Roma's which oddly has the same concept, but is closer. It's also busy and there's something off-putting about sitting down to eat in the Italian Market when you're 1 of 3 people in the joint.

Mamma Roma's is the BEST...I love that place...love the atmosphere, the lady at the counter knows me by name even when I walk in she is calling my name. I have only eaten at Damon's twice and was not impressed. I don't know what I would want in that spot. I just hope it's something decent and nothing to expensive.
John April 13, 2012 at 03:15 PM
Mamma's absolutely got it right. It's a family-run place and reflects that. The Italian Market seems to have simply hired random kids and it also reflects that. And I think the lady behind the counter at Mamma's works 100 hours a week. I'm not sure is the owners are present at the Italian Market. To me, the atmosphere there is the owners drop by once a month.

I'd be for another sports bar and grill but given the lack of decent choices around these parts, pretty much anything would be an improvement in this vacant space. Champps (like in Columbia and Pentagon City) seems a likely candidate and there is a national chain called Beef O'Brady's (nearest is Frederick) which is pretty good and seems like it would be a fit. Too bad Austin Grill couldn't translate its past success in DC and VA to its Maryland franchises, because they have some great Tex-Mex in an environment that was both family and DINK friendly. Guess that Buffalo Wild Wings (Bowie, Annapolis, College Park) which is also now in the Arundel Mills Mall is too close for another store, and same for Greene Turtle and Ramshead. Anything that comes in that is new and halfway decent should do pretty well given the lack of competition. Have to admit that I am not a fan of Mamma Roma's - nice folks but just about the worst Italian food I have ever had.

I also like Mamma Roma's - good people and good food! I like Italian Market as well - their pizza is my favorite in the area. I had not been to Italian Market for a sit-down meal for quite a while until I went with my extended family for lunch last weekend. Everyone thought the food was very good and we all had different things. I agree that they have a great outdoor seating area that is unfortunately underutilized.

I realized that I had not really answered the question posed in the article. I don't know if there would be enough interest to support it, but I would love an Indian restaurant in the area!

I should have added that I would have been in favor of a Buffalo Wild Wings but I don't see that happening with Greene Turtle set to open soon.
John April 13, 2012 at 07:51 PM
We've been to the one in Annapolis several times - fantastic joint. Would love to see one up here.

I believe there is a green turtule coming to the new shopping where the target is located at....I think I saw a sign. never ate at one, but I have heard good reviews and if there is one coming I would try it out!
Benscoter April 14, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Buffalo Wild Wings would be great. Can't say the location in Bowie is to close considering they put a Target like 4 miles from another Target. Plus the Bowie location isn't the best experience.
Khrista April 14, 2012 at 01:02 PM
How about an Outback?
Christine Hinton April 14, 2012 at 01:56 PM
We used to live near a beef o' brady's years ago. Loved it! good food. lots of tv for sports and a bunch of arcade games to keep the kids happy. Plus a great bar.
Laura Roskelly April 14, 2012 at 02:30 PM
Buffalo Wild Wings would be awesome!
John_P April 14, 2012 at 05:40 PM
Italian Market is way over priced for the quality and just the overall experience. It's a glorified take out place that is dressed up to look nicer. You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a.....

If the choice is a sports bar, how about Bill Bateman's Bistro? Personally, I'd rather see a place to get a great Maryland crabcake, some steamed spiced shrimp or BBQ - someplace unique to Maryland like Adam's Ribs.
Janet April 18, 2012 at 12:11 AM
My choice would be Outback or Bonefish. Italian Market is good and clean. Mamma Romas was not so clean when I was there twice.
Lisa April 18, 2012 at 03:28 AM
I wouldn't want Bill Bateman's. I've eaten in both local bistros and have come away unimpressed with both food and service. Outback or Bonefish would be good choices if it was going to be a chain, but I'd rather have a restaurant with local ties.
Calique April 18, 2012 at 01:23 PM
There are Buffalo Wild Wings and a Greene Turtle locations in Arundel Mills... I don't know if Waugh Chapel wouldn't be too close for another location of either of those.
John April 18, 2012 at 02:07 PM
Greene Turtle is coming into Waugh Chapel South.
Dave April 19, 2012 at 05:00 PM
Damons was a terrible excuse for a sports bar! Ancient tube tvs, horrible low def projectors, limited beer selection on tap, mediocre food, and a weird layout make for a place destined for bankruptsy. I refused to watch any sports there personally. Look at BWW for how to do it right. I vote for a Tilted Kilt (:
Sarah K May 14, 2012 at 05:22 PM
Greene Turtle and Bonefish is coming to the new center, I'd be happy with a BWW or even an Adam's Ribs, but definitely a place to hang out with some good deals during games!
Susan Dunn Valentine May 23, 2012 at 04:54 AM
It could be Joe's Crab Shack. That's what is replacing the Damon's at Arundel Mills Mall.
RC May 27, 2012 at 08:24 PM
I used to love Damon's when they first open'd but in the past few years, the food went down hill and I didnt even know it went out of business... I guess that should be a message to these business on quality of food. I agree with what others said about the Italian Mkt, my 2 experiences were horrible and now sure how they are still in business. I wouldnt mind seeing a Bonefish or something that really has that bar feel and would give the Green Turtle a run for their money but PLZ no Bill Batemans. Either way you slice it, I'll be happy with just good food and good drinks. Anyone try the new Mexican Place that replaced Jaspers? how is it???
Melissa Reagan July 23, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Adams Ribs would be a fantastic replacement!! BWW would also be great. I'd vote against Outback or Bill batemans.
Joe Robinson July 23, 2012 at 10:11 PM
Joe's Crab Shack would be great. Haven't been to the one here in MD but went all the time to the one in Louisville. I heard the new Mexican place had good drinks but not so great food. Momma Romas would be great, but that would be right next to Italian Market. They (Momma Romas) could give that new Coal Fire Pizza a run for their money.

Any updates on this? It's been a while with no word. I'd love to see a Miller's Ale House go in that location. It's a chain out of Florida that is rapidly expanding and the food is delicious.
John August 03, 2012 at 10:35 PM
The new Mexican resturant (Ponchos N' Pepes) has good margaritas, but the food is Ho-hum..... Bummer.
