Power Outages Continue Days After Irene

Where do you see power outages around Crofton and Gambrills? Some area homes and businesses remain in the dark days after Tropical Storm Irene. Crofton's town manager questions why power went out after remaining on during the storm.

Sunday morning people were lined up outside the Village at Waugh Chapel Chipotle waiting for the restaurant to open at 11 a.m.

The eatery, along with most of the other shops were, open for business Sunday. Atlanta Bread Company was packed with customers. Many of who held conversations about having no power at their homes around Crofton and Gambrills.

Monday power was off at the majority of shops at the Village at Waugh Chapel.

A portable generator ran outside the Smoothie King.

One business owner told Crofton Patch the power at the shopping center had been off since 1 a.m.

Driving along Route 3 (Crain Highway), businesses between the Interstate 97 interchange and Maryland 450 (Annapolis Road) were also without power.

Monday Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and Gov. Martin O’Malley said more than 450,000 households across the state experienced power outages. MEMA officials said the power outages could last until Friday as local utilitiy companies work to restore service.

Crofton Town Manager Larry Schweinsburg .

“[We] still have not seen any sign of electric power repair work in Crofton area. Maybe I have missed something. Interestingly, it appears that more homes are without power now! Power was interrupted hours after the storm was gone!” Schweinsburg wrote.

“Apparently BGE is directing resources to other locations. County crews have been doing great work with clean up effort,” Schweinsburg wrote.

In the interim, Crofton town employees have been working to remove debris around the area.

“Our CCA (Crofton Civic Association) maintenance foreman has also been working hard. Town Hall has received no information about anticipated time for restoration of power. Good luck everyone,” Schweinsburg wrote.
