The Maryland Department of Environment has provided tentative approval for a rubble landfill to be built at the end of Capitol Raceway Road in Crofton.

The MDE has scheduled an informational meeting and public hearing next month on plans submitted by Tolson & Associates, which last presented plans to the public in 2004.

The session will be held on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at Crofton Elementary School.

In its notice of the public hearing, MDE described the landfill as a “nonhazardous solid waste management facility.”

Documents tied to the application were not immediately available for viewing. Residents of the area said they were eager to see the landfill plans, so that they could assess what areas might be impacted.

“There are numerous homes around this site that have wells and could be impacted by a landfill. We need to be aware of that,” said Tim Berkoff of the local community group Crofton First.

If the application was unchanged from seven years ago, plans would call for the landfill to use up about 80 acres of a 184-acre property. The Maryland Gazette in 2004 reported that plans called for the landfill to stretch to within about 1,000 feet of homes in the Courts at Four Seasons and 250 feet from GORC Park.

An information session regarding the application was last held on July 14, 2004. The Maryland Gazette reported in 2004 that the application was nearly identical to one presented by Cunningham Excavating. The MDE shot down Cunningham’s previous efforts to build the landfill, the Gazette reported.

The public will have the opportunity to comment on the application until Sept. 9. All comments are to be directed to Horacio Tablada, director of MDE’s Land Management Administration, 1800 Washington Boulevard, Baltimore, MD 21230.
