Report: Wegmans Now a 'Major Force' Nationally

The Rochester Business Journal outlines the grocery chain's growth, and said the company has no plans to rest on its growth.

Last fall, hundreds of people lined outside for the grand opening of the new Wegmans store, even as Superstorm Sandy approached the East Coast.

A business publication near Wegmans' in Rochester, NY took note of this phenomenon in a recent article outlining the grocery chain's recent growth.

The Rochester Business Journal reported that the expansion to Gambrills and other markets in the last year has helped make Wegmans one of the more notable brands nationwide.

"The food retailer's expansion has made it a major force not just in Rochester but on a national level as well," the RBJ reported.

While Wegmans always had a strong following in its hometown of Rochester, it has managed to find big support everywhere it opens a new store.

"In Rochester, Wegmans was always a big deal," Jack Doyle, a Rochester native and Virginia resident, told the RBJ. "I didn't expect it to have the big following that it has in the Virginia and D.C. areas."

Current plans for expansion include a new store in Rochester and possible one in the Fenway section of Boston. In 2014, it plans to open stores in Germantown, MD, Montgomeryville, PA, and Newton, MA.
