The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has issued a “code orange” air quality alert for Monday in the Baltimore metropolitan area, including Anne Arundel County.

The MDE warned that concentrations of air pollution could become unhealthy for parts of the population, including children, the elderly and those suffering from asthma, other lung problems and heart disease. The biggest concern from the MDE was the level of ozone.

The air quality index for Monday was 111. Anything more than 100 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Forecasts suggest air quality could be a problem for much of the week, with warm, moist air coupled with clear skies leading to high ozone production.

The MDE said the effects of the pollution can be reduced by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.
