From the Kids' Table: Mi Casita

What's for dinner? Two of Crofton's junior foodies share their review of mexican restaurant, Mi Casita.

My son and daughter (whom I affectionately refer to as Monkey #1 and Monkey #2) have a love of food.

While, like most kids, they started out in the land of mac and cheese and chicken fingers, they've really developed into little foodies with great palates. (A blessing for a mom who enjoys a wide variety of cuisines.)

We started this restaurant review as a way to work on my son's English assignment, but had so much fun, we've decided to turn it into a blog. Our hope is that it gives you a little insight into which local businesses are family friendly, and perhaps encourages some of Crofton's youngest residents to expand their appetites!

We'll start in the Crofton area, but may end up eating our way across other Patch territories. Enjoy and bon appetit!

The Food

Monkey #1: I like Mexican food because most of it comes with cheese. The food at Mi Casita is great. Tonight I ordered the burrito combo number 13. It looks like an enchilada, but it’s a burrito.  Usually I get the steak quesadilla (Quesadilla La Plancha). I also got rice and beans and a taco. The food is great. I know you will love it.

Monkey #2: The food tastes really good and they put a little bit of spice, but not too much. They put the right amount of food and it tastes really good. And I like the black beans. My favorite is the soup (Caldo de Pollo) because it is really good and has lots of yummy vegetables and they are real vegetables that can make you really healthy. Next time I want a bean and cheese burrito. The drinks. Some are healthy and some are not. I choose the healthy ones—milk and water. The one that I like, but I don’t order all the time, but I used to, is the chocolate milk. But it's not that healthy.

Mom: When I moved from San Diego, I searched for authentic Mexican food in the area and was left fairly disappointed until 2007 when Mi Casita opened. It has become a family favorite and one that the kids request the most. My favorites are the Chile Rellenos, Fajitas Del Mar, and the Sopa Azteca (a fantastic tortilla soup topped with lots of fresh avocado.) But my best recommendation is to always order the nightly entrée special. It changes regularly and is always amazing. The seafood dishes are especially delicious and not what you would typically expect at a Mexican restaurant!

The Service

Monkey #1: The service is awesome. I LIKE LINCOLN. (one of our regular servers) Also I like Jorge.  They are very nice, but overall they are all very nice. We get our food at the perfect speed.

Monkey #2: They are really fun. It feels like I’m going to lunch with my family. Jorge and Lincoln are really nice and I give them hugs all the time, because they are my friends. Ms. Catalina is nice and she is really funny, because when I come in wearing something fancy she says, “is that for me?” They feel like my family.

Mom: The restaurant is a community favorite and is usually pretty busy, but we’re almost always seated pretty quickly. (If you go on Friday or Saturday night, expect a little wait to be seated. Or avoid the issue and go a little earlier.) The servers work well together and we usually are well attended to for our many drink refills, request for napkins, etc.

The Atmosphere

Monkey #1: It’s a very happy place to be. There music is very neat and from Mexico.   It’s a very bright place to be. It makes you feel like you’re visiting Mexico.

Monkey #2: It feels like a home. When I see the persons cooking the food, they are really funny.

Mom: I like to support locally owned businesses and the owners Catalina and Gloria are some of the hardest working ladies I’ve ever met. One of them is always there to greet us. The name “Mi Casita” means my little house, and they very much welcome you like you are arriving for dinner at their home. There is something very wonderful and small town about walking into a restaurant where your kids are greeted with smiles and hugs.

Why Your Kids Will Love It

Monkey #1: They serve great food. And say you’re a kid that likes to get chicken nuggets. You can. Sometimes you can get what you would get at other places or you can try new things. They make great specials that your kids might like.  Like tonight I tasted my mom’s order. It was fantastic!

Ava: Everyone there is really nice. The food is great. It tastes so good.

Why Parents will Love it:

Mom:  The restaurant is definitely family-friendly with staff that are very accommodating and friendly. The menu has options for the non-adventurous kiddos (chicken nuggets, Caldo de  Pollo (chicken soup with carrots, green beans and squash) and quesadillas) and lots of options for those who want to try some new foods. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is fun. The owners Catalina and Gloria have put their heart and soul into the place and they welcome you with open arms, even if that comes with spilled drinks, order changes and multiple batches of chips!
