Winter Squash 101: Acorn, Butternut and Spaghetti

If it's cold, it must be squash season. Did you know some squash is best cooked whole?

In the produce aisle at the grocery store, there is an abundance of winter squash in various shapes, sizes and colors ranging from light orange and yellowish-green to dark green. Don't be intimidated—click here for a primer on the most common types of winter squash: acorn, butternut and spaghetti.

Consider adding squash to your holiday meal menu.

"Mash or puree squash to use in pie, cookie, or muffin recipes," according to the blog Healthy Ideas by Elisabeth D’Alto. "You can even mash it up with a drizzle of olive oil, maple syrup and ginger, or add some of your favorite holiday seasonings like allspice, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin, ginger or tarragon."
