Arundel Color Guard in Middle of 'Fun' Season

The Arundel Indoor Color Guard is in the middle of its most successful—and fun—season in recent memory. 

Powered by an energetic routine and several veteran members, the guard recently earned top honors at a competition in Pennsylvania, and is prepping for a trip to Disney World later this month. 

"This year has been so much fun," said senior Natasha Salzinger, an Arundel High senior from Crofton, who has been with the guard for six years. "The routine this year is probably my favorite of all time."

This year's routine is based on theme of "Be Yourself." It opens with majestic movements set to classical music, then finishes on an energetic tone behind the song Barbie Girl, by Aqua. 

The guard features 15 members, all of whom also took part in the marching band season at Arundel. They range in age from 11 to 18, with most members attending either Arundel High or Arundel Middle schools.

The indoor guard began practicing its new routine in mid-December and is working to perfect it in time for a season-ending competition in Wildwood, NJ in May.

But recent results suggest the guard is already looking sharp. The guard won first place on March 3 at the NJATOB Indoor Guard Competition in Windsor, PA. Arundel earned a score of 65.21 raising their score from a 57.51 just two weeks prior.

"This is the most successful the team has ever been in its existence," color guard director Melissa Reagan said. "They really want it this year."

The Arundel guard will travel to Disney world for a competition with other members of the music department on March 20. 

The team is always seeking funds to help pay for equipment and trips. It hopes to raise some money by selling tickets to an April 6 show at Arundel featuring a guard from Meade High. The two groups will also perform at Meade High the same evening. 

In addition, the guard is hoping to get some funds from the at Crofton Country Club on July 1.
