Police: Crofton Middle Student Had Marijuana

A student at the school was charged on a juvenile citation with possession of drug paraphernalia, according to police.

Update (March 7, 3:35 p.m.)—Police report that Western District officers spoke Tuesday afternoon with Crofton Middle School officials regarding a possible controlled dangerous substance violation.

A 13-year-old male student was charged on a juvenile citation with possession of drug paraphernalia and released to the custody of a parent, according to an email from spokesman Justin Mulcahy of the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

(Original post) A student at was found to be in possession of marijuana on Tuesday afternoon, according to a letter to parents from the principal. Anne Arundel County police were called to the school and will investigate the incident that initially appears to involve just one student.

A letter from the school was not sent home with students before dismissal, but was emailed to parents later Tuesday afternoon.

"Anne Arundel County Public Schools does not tolerate behavior of this kind," wrote principal Sharon H. Hansen. "I assure you that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against anyone found to be in possession of drugs."

Police will handle the investigation to determine if the student will face criminal charges while the school will follow the protocol outlined in the Code of Student Conduct for possession of a controlled substance.

"While this is disappointing, I feel certain this incident is an isolated one and not indicative of the climate that exists at Crofton Middle School," Hansen said in her letter to parents. "Our students and staff make me proud every day, and I am sure they will rise above this incident and continue to focus on the great instruction and academics that go on at the school every day."
