Witnesses told Patch that the fire began at about 5:30 p.m. and appeared to come from a second-floor unit of the Keswick Park Apartments, located at 1609 Parkridge Circle.

Fire department spokesman Lt. Keith Hamilton said the fire was under control just before 6 p.m. It was kept in check by the apartment's sprinkler system.

Hamilton said investigators believe the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. The fire caused an estimated $15,000 in damage.

A 20-year-old man was home at the time of the fire but was unhurt.
