Grandmother Charged With Lifting Wallet at School Assembly

The grandmother of a student at Marley Elementary School was charged with theft and banned from the school for allegedly stealing a teacher’s wallet during an assembly Tuesday morning, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

The grandmother was identified as Theresa Yvonne Sayles, 49, of 128 Southbridge Drive Apartment C, in Glen Burnie.

Police were called to the elementary school on the 700 block of Cooper Road in Glen Burnie just before 11 a.m. School employees say Sayles went into an empty classroom during the assembly and was confronted by a teacher.

After Sayles returned to the assembly in the cafeteria, police said, the teacher realized her wallet was missing. The victim allegedly saw Sayles holding the wallet in the cafeteria and rummaging through it, police say. Sayles was reportedly seen taking something out of the wallet and throwing it into a trash can.

The wallet was retrieved and money was missing from it.

Sayles was then arrested and charged with theft under $100 and disturbing school activities.

According to the Maryland Judiciary website, Sayles has previously been charged with five counts of theft of less than $500, disorderly conduct, first-, third- and fourth-degree burglary, attempted fourth-degree burglary, and concealing a deadly weapon among other charges dating back to 1992, reports CBS DC.
