Small Fire at BGE Substation Disrupts Power

Residents may have experienced short outages at about 1 a.m. Thursday.

Area residents experienced brief power outages early Thursday morning after a small fire at the BGE substation on Waugh Chapel Road.

Firefighters responded shortly before 1 a.m. to a report of some equipment on fire, according to Division Chief Michael Cox of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

They arrived to find a small box containing mineral oil on fire. BGE cut power to allow access to the equipment, and the fire was put out quickly.

Did you lose power early Thursday morning?

I did lose power. I thought perhaps I slept thru a storm or something. Woke up briefly at 1:00am and then went back to sleep. My kitchen clocks were all blinking when I went downstairs at 5:00am.

I was awake when it went out, judging by the sound of the explosion in the distance there was more going on than a small fire.

We were getting ready to go to sleep and we heard the explosion at 12:14 am. There was a huge bang and then a couple of seconds later there was a flash. Very strange.

I live in Seven Oaks and was battling with insomnia! The lights went out, then came back, then out again, then back on again...all within a matter of 45 seconds. I knew it wasn't weather related...thanks Patch for letting us know when these unexplained instances happen in the community!

Yes--and missed my 5:50 am train as a result! :-( Thanks for letting us know what caused it: I knew the power couldn't have been off for long, because only two of my digital clocks were affected--but it was long enough for the alarm (which doesn't have battery back-up) to reset to 12:00, and I wasn't aware of any weather conditions that could have been responsible! (I thought maybe someone had hit a power line.)
