Sunday Morning Fire Guts Crofton Home

A family is displaced after a single-family home became fully engulfed at about 8 a.m. Sunday on Knights Bridge Turn.

A Crofton home became fully engulfed in flames Sunday morning, requiring more than 55 firefighters to put it out.

Crews from several fire departments took more than an hour to put out the two-alarm fire on the 1400 block of Knights Bridge Turn, but residents managed to escape without injury, according to Lt. Cliff Kooser, spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Stephen Krepps said he and his brother were asleep inside at about 8 a.m. and didn't realize the house was on fire.

"We were asleep, and all of the sudden, people starting banging on the windows," Krepps said.

Krepps said he and his brother escaped and his parents were not home. He said he did not know how the fire started.

The fire destroyed the upper story of the home, though the garage remained largely intact.

The house sustained about $400,000 in damage, Kooser said. Inspectors were on scene and a cause of the fire was not yet determined.

Homes next door were also damaged, with heat from the flames melting siding.

While the flames were under control shortly after 9 a.m., fire trucks lined the streets through most of the morning, with crews from the Odenton Volunteer Fire Department continuing work to remove any nearby tree branches that could catch fire.
