Citizens Urge Detour in Route 3 Rezoning Bill

Some Crofton-Gambrills-Odenton area residents want the Anne Arundel County Council to reconsider proposed zoning changes to parts of Route 3.

Bill #12-11 is an ordinance calling for comprehensive zoning in council districts 1 and 4.  On Monday, the council fielded concerns from citizens during a public hearing on the amendments to the bill.

Some Crofton, Gambrills and Odenton residents want the Anne Arundel County Council to reconsider proposed zoning changes to parts of Route 3.

One issue is a proposal to for development that could include a $12 million Boys and Girls Club in conjunction with the Y of Central Maryland.  Some residents are concerned that the plan could increase traffic along Route 3 and Waugh Chapel Road. They said this could lead to need for more traffic lights, access roads and sidewalks in the area.

Additional area rezoning amendments:
  • Amendment #24 changes the zoning for some properties located at Evergreen Road in Odenton from “Rural Agricultural” to ”Residential Low Density.”
  • Amendment #25 changes the rezoning for properties off Evergreen Road, Brickhead Road and Waugh Chapel in Gambrills from “Residential” to an “Open Space District.” 
  • Amendment #26 changes zoning for properties at 3285 Laurel Fort Meade Road in Maryland City from “Mixed Use Districts” to “General Commercial Districts.”
  • Amendment #27 changes the zoning of property at 792 Herald Harbor Road in Crownsville from “Residential Low Density” to a “Local Commercial District.”
  • Amendment #28 and #29 call for changes to property zoned at MD 3 South and McKnew Road in Gambrills from “Open Space District” to “Residential” and some parcels from “Highway Commercial District” to “General Commercial Districts.”
  • Amendment #34 changes the zoning for property 877 MD 3 North and South of St. Stephens Church Road in Gambrills from “Local Commercial  Districts” to “Residential.”
