Long Lines to Vote in West County

From Odenton to Crofton to Severn, voters reported wait times of an hour or more.

Residents of west Anne Arundel County reported long lines at polling centers Tuesday morning, with some prospective voters deciding to come back later in the day.

Centers in Odenton, Crofton and Gambrills had packed parking lots, while voters in Severn said they waited more than 90 minutes during the morning rush.

At Waugh Chapel Elementary School, voters sat in their cars and waited for voters to exit.

One man said he waited about an hour to vote. But then he pointed to a long line near the school's entrance.

"This wasn't here when I started," he said.

Dave Daughters of Gambrills was found exiting Four Seasons Elementary School at about 10:30 a.m. He hadn't voted.

"I have an appointment in Annapolis at 11:30...I can't stay any longer," he said. "I'll give it another try this afternoon, I guess."

Crystal Ridge of Severn said she waited from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to vote at Severn Elementary. Many other morning voters said lines were long even before polls opened at 7 a.m.

For the most part, the mood was cheerful. Girl Scout and Brownie troops took advantage of the opportunity to sell cookies at polling stations.

At Odenton Elementary School, Girl Scouts from Troop 96 quizzed each other on U.S. History as voters walked by. Wait times ranged from one hour to 90 minutes at the school on Tuesday morning.

Most voters chose to stick it out, but others didn't.

"We didn't even wait, the line is too long," said one woman who came to Four Seasons Elementary School with her two children. "I've never seen it this bad."

I have to differ with the accounts given here. It took less than 45 minutes from parking the car till leaving the parking lot to go back to work. It helps alot if you read the voters' guide and check mark your choices ahead of time. I finished the actual vote in under three minutes.

Arrived at O'Malley Senior Center at 7:00. Line was out the door, across the front of the building and a short way down the sidewalk of the parking lot. I spent 1 1/2 hours there. I would have miss the 8:36 MARC train if it weren't running late (today I was thankful for a MARC delay)! O'Malley had 7 stations, one of which is for those needing to sit. Too much cramped into one small room. The Board of Elections really needs to reconsider that location. I'm wondering why I live a few blocks away from Waugh Chapel Elementary School and have to drive to O'Malley? Doesn't make much sense.

I mailed mine on Thursday. Everyone should try it. No line at my mailbox.

You know....I am actually HAPPY there were lines. Voting in this country has been abysmal historically and to see sooooo many voters was wonderful. This is America and so many from our past fought long and hard (especially women and minorities) to have this right to vote. I can't believe people were complaining. While I was happy I only had to wait for 35 minutes (which is 25 minutes longer than I have ever had to before) I would have waited for 3 hours or more if needed. what I do complain about is there were so many things that we had to vote on this time around. There should be a limit on the number of things that are voted on...seriously....THIRTY check marks? That was a bit and some of them were confusing if you had not taken the time like I did to research a bit before coming. Even with researching for over an hour the day before the election it still took me about 8-10 minutes to just vote.
