Snow Gives Federal Workers Leave Options

As region deals with snow, federal workers can take unscheduled leave or telework.

As the Washington region deals with the first real bout of winter weather this morning, the federal government is giving its employees the option to stay home.

Federal agencies are open, but federal workers have the option to take unscheduled leave or an unscheduled telework day, according to a message from the Office of Personnel Management distributed by the notify Me Prince George's alert system.

The photo says it all. This is what qualifies in the dc area as a snow day! Apparently "think snow" is not just a bumper sticker, the concept alone is enough to do is in.

What I don’t understand is why some people don’t understand how come so many people resent unions. I was at by desk at 7:30 this morning. The roads are fine. People want an effective efficient government and the federal employees union is part of the problem. This is a shame as they make many good federal employees appear lazy to the rest of the country. And a shame as unions play an important role in capitalism, but the government workers union is part of the problem. It’s a little snow. Get your ass out of the house and get to work.

What does the federal employees union have to do with this? Federal employees had three options today. 1) show up for work in their government office, 2) work at their pre-approved offsite location or 3) use a day of their vacation leave. Federal employees did not get a day off today.

JiminyCricket, I agree; a lot of people hear that the feds get "liberal leave," "unscheduled leave," and act like it is some type of perk; all it means is that they can use a day of their earned vacation leave without having to get prior supervisory approval. Nothing more. As for unions - not all federal workers belong to the unions, in fact I'd say most do not. And as for the roads, many of the main roads WERE fine, however I saw plenty of side streets that were completely snow-covered and slippery.

Worked for the government, I understand leave. The roads were passable, I had to work, could not just opt out and use leave or sick time. The country is going broke... it was a small amount of snow, no need to cut into production. Man-up!
