Veterans, Boy Scouts Hold Flag Retirement Ceremonies

Boy scouts and service members in Gambrills and at Fort Meade took part in special ceremonies Friday.

On Friday, Boy Scouts and military service members from around the area took part in special flag retirement ceremonies in recognition of Flag Day.

VFW Meade Memorial Post 5172 and Boy Scout Troop 755 held a ceremony in Gambrills, while Troop 377 from Fort Meade also held a ceremony on the installation.

Army journalist and Staff Sgt. Stephen Crofoot was on hand at the flag retirement ceremony in Gambrills on Friday, and offered his account on the DVIDSHub.net website

The keynote speaker at the Gambrills event was Col. Tracy Smith, the chief of staff for First Army Division East. Smith said he spent the morning recognizing the Army's 238th Birthday, and was happy to spend the evening recognizing the flag as a symbol of America.

"I have spent all day among people who are proud of our nation, who want to make it a better place, and who proudly wear our flag on their shoulders,” Smith said.
