AHS Partying the Night Away

Arundel High School After Prom seniors stayed up until 2 a.m. for a chance to win more than $5,000 worth of prizes

More than 300 people attended the 10th Annual After Prom Celebration at Arundel High School’s cafeteria on the evening of May 13.

Seniors were drawn to the event by the possibility they could win a high value prize such as an iPad 2, laptop computer, or a flatscreen television. Students were given tickets and entered them into drawings for prizes in which they were interested.

Kelsie Barbour, who won a 32 GB iPod Touch with a docking station and Apple Store gift card, said, “I’m so thrilled. My iPod just broke. This is perfect timing.”

It was a sentiment echoed by Arundel High School quarterback Nick Rosati. Rosati really wanted a flat screen television and choose to split all of his 15 tickets between the two flat screen televisions that were being given away.

Rosati’s name was drawn as the winner of a 19-inch flat screen television, and then drawn again as the winner of a 26-inch flat screen television. Students could only win one prize, so Rosati opted to keep the 26-inch television, “I’m so happy,” he exclaimed. So was Dahmir Green, whose name was then drawn as the winner of the won the 19-inch television.

Some of the most sought after prizes of the night were $100 gas cards, or prizes that included $50 gas cards and were bundled with car care items, such as car washes donated by Water Works Car Wash and oil changes donated by Tires Plus.

Discounts and donations from more than 30 businesses, such as Best Buy and Buffalo Wild Wings, allowed organizers to stretch the funds raised during a Basket Bingo held in March. “The support we received from local businesses and volunteers was absolutely phenomenal,” said event chair Veronica Platt.

Platt and other parent volunteers were particularly impressed with the support they received from Navy Information Operations Command personnel, stationed at Fort Meade. The group sent 14 volunteers to the After Prom who helped set up, clean up, and ran games during the After Prom.

“They were fabulous, they helped with everything,” Platt said,  “and it was great to see the interactions between the sailors and students.”
