CMES 5th Grade Promotion

Graduating 5th grade students ask parents "Do I Make You Proud?"

With cameras and flowers in hand a crowd of parents and other family members packed the Crofton Meadows Elementary School cafeteria on Tuesday morning. The group, beaming with pride, were there to celebrate the 5th grade promotion. The ceremony began promptly at 8:30 a.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the students singing “American Beautiful."

Principal Janine Robinson handed out numerous academic and achievement awards, including Band Achievement won by Caden Brian and Faith Madeoy-Gault. “It seems like yesterday that we just started. I can’t wait until middle school. I have already met the band teacher at Crofton Middle School,” said Brian. His teacher, Dawn Ciancaglini said “These are very unique kids with great personalities. We are so proud of them for all their successes.” Hailee Edmundson and Hannah Pierson received the Strings Achievement Award.

Principal Robinson also read a letter from the President of the United States to the winners of the Presidential Academic Award recipients for Excellence and Achievement. Perfect Attendance awards were awarded to Hailee Edmundson, Marquette Harris, Jocey Terrone and David Walker.

After weeks of practice with Danielle Slater, music teacher, the students sang Taylor Hick’s “Do I Make You Proud?”

“They sang beautifully! Ninety-five percent of the fifth grade class takes chorus, so they were well prepared for the performance,” said the Crofton resident Slater.

Valerie Smith, another fifth grade teacher added “This is a great group of students. They have come so far and it has been wonderful watching them grow since first grade. This class is definitely well prepared for middle school.”

“It has been amazing watching them grow since September. They have changed so much over the year. Last month the entire 5th grade class went to Toby’s Dinner Theater. It was a wonderful experience not only for the parents and grandparents but the students as well. They dressed up and went to a fancy "adult" dinner. It was a great way to end the year,” said teacher Amy Cornelius.

At the end of the ceremony a slide show featuring baby pictures and current pictures of every fifth grader was presented. Jackie Newell, mother of Nicole said “It seems like just yesterday they were babies! Time goes by so quickly.”

Breakfast was provided to the graduating class and their families by the CMES PTA. “The PTA always provides a nice breakfast for the families to enjoy after the ceremony. The fourth grade parents also help too. Our school is very proud of all the accomplishments this class has made,” said Denise Wilson.

Also helping out at the breakfast was physical education teacher Gina Venturella. “This fifth grade class has shown true leadership ability. On Field Day, they were in charge of running stations for the first through fourth grades. Over the past school year it has been fantastic watching them grow into young adults,” said the life long Crofton resident Venturella.
