Crofton Elementary School Hosts Family Fun and Game Night

Students, staff and parents enjoyed healthy activities and friendly competition.

In the spirit of competition, parents and staff appeared to be enjoying themselves as much as the students during Crofton Elementary School's annual Family Fun and Game Night on Friday.

Lisa Hogan and Sandi Ranck were co-chairwomen of the Parent Teacher Association event that was planned for families.

Parents filled the school's multipurpose room with board games, snacks, desserts and laughter.

Amid a sea of pink and blue Crofton Elementary School T-shirts, PTA vice-president Hogan said she was pleased to see children jumping, sliding, playing basketball and bouncing on the inflatable playground from Goodtime Amusements of Glen Burnie.

Connect Four, Mouse Trap, Operation, Perfection and retro vibrating football were just a few of the games that brought out the kid in many of the adults.

"I get competitive and I got beat by a five-year-old," said Joe De Silva of playing a game with his daughter.  Not accepting defeat he sized up the competition. "I'm a champ at this game, and I will rock."

Crofton Elementary School Principal Donna O'Shea along with her staff and PTA created the healthy environment for the students and staff. Family Fun and Game Night was made possible by a grant and is part of an ongoing initiative to promote an active lifestyle.

"As recipients of a (grant), we are going green and healthy," said O'Shea.

To help students and staff stay active and eat healthier during school hours, O'Shea started a walking club. Students receive cards and walk laps around the playground. A hole is punched in the card for every lap walked. After several holes, students earn fun and tokens to wear on their shoelaces.

Classes at the school also compete weekly for a coveted spirit banner. Every Friday, O'Shea determines which class donned the most blue and white and the winner hangs the banner on their classroom door. The excitement and school spirit continued at Friday's Family Fun and Game Night.

The evening culminated with a race down a big slide between O'Shea and Derek Burns, the school's assistant principal.

The crowd squealed with anticipation and Hogan announced the results of the race.

"It's a tie," she said.
