Crofton Meadows Named Maryland Blue Ribbon School

A Crofton school rises to the ranks of the state's highest achieving schools. Crofton Meadows Elementary is among six schools honored as Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools.

became Anne Arundel County’s 15th Maryland Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Tuesday, according to a press release from the county public school system.

The news came as part of a ceremony at the Maryland Department of Education in Baltimore.

  • Pocomoke Elementary School (Worcester County)
  • (Montgomery County)
  • (Harford County)
  • (Prince George’s County)
  • Woodholme Elementary School (Baltimore County)

First-year principal Derek Burns attended the ceremony. He was joined by Anne Arundel County Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Board President Patricia Nalley and Regional Assistant Superintendent Dr. Monique Davis.

“This is a great school with great community involvement, and this award is proof of the tremendous things we can do together,” Burns said in the release. “As the newcomer here, I am the beneficiary of a collaborative effort that is simply second to none.”

Former Crofton Meadows Principal Janine Robinson also attended the announcement with several school staff members.

“The school and its community deserve every accolade they receive because they work so hard together to achieve great things for children,” Robinson said in the release.

According to news release, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors schools that excel or significantly improve in reading and math exams as measured by state assessments.

In order to achieve Blue Ribbon status, schools must meet standards established by the Maryland and U.S. departments of education.

The release credits Crofton Meadows as the 10th county elementary school to earn the award. It is also reportedly the second in the South River High School feeder system.

It is the sixth time in the past eight years and 10th time since 2000-2001 that the county has had a Blue Ribbon School.

This honor puts Crofton Meadows in the running to become a National Blue Ribbon School.
