Crofton Teen Named Bank of America Student Leader

Hannah Street, 18, hopes to learn more about nonprofits so she can continue her work with the disabled.

Recent South River High School graduate Hannah Street is happiest when she’s helping people.

“I love to help people and see how what I do affects people in a positive way,” said the 18-year-old Crofton resident, who was recently chosen as one of Bank of America’s Student Leaders.

In particular, Street enjoys working with people with disabilities, as evidenced by her role as a volunteer track and field coach for the Special Olympics and her role as president of Best Buddies, a non-profit that creates friendships, employment opportunities, and leadership development for people who are developmentally or intellectually disabled.

Street is also the recipient of the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts.

As one of Bank of America’s Student Leaders, Street is taking part in an eight-week, paid internship at Teach for America in Baltimore where she is working as part of the regional operations team. The office work she's been doing has been of great interest to Street because she wants to learn about the finances and inner-workings of nonprofit organizations.

Street’s internship also will take her to Washington, DC for a week, where she will take part in a national Student Leadership Summit and continue to learn about nonprofits.

In the fall, Street will head to Lehigh University on a merit scholarship. She plans to play lacrosse and major in business, but she might switch to a nonprofit track if her internship goes well this summer.

She hopes to one day do something to improve the lives of people with disabilities, or teach, although she hasn’t quite made up her mind yet.

“To see a smile on someone’s face, that makes me so happy,” said Street.

When not volunteering or working at her internship, Street loves spending time with her parents, Karen and Ward, and her older sister Natalie, who just graduated from James Madison University. She also loves playing lacrosse and hanging out with her friends.
