Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events Lecture
Come join us for our fall General Membership Meeting to learn more about how the increased major climatic events are affecting our area.
This presentation by Dr. Emily Becker of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center will clarify the relationships and differences between weather and climate, as well as the differences between natural climate variability and human-induced climate change. Dr. Becker will use this background to discuss long-term trends in extreme weather and climate events, including heat waves, droughts, hurricanes, and tornadoes, as well as sea-level rise. This talk will address the potential effects of climate change and extreme weather on Maryland and the Annapolis area. There will be a discussion following the presentation.
Emily J. Becker is a research scientist at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, in College Park, MD. Her research focuses on climate extremes, including monthly and seasonal temperature extremes, drought, and heavy rain, with the goal of improving prediction of these events. Dr. Becker graduated from the University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, where she specialized in understanding the mechanisms affecting the frequency and intensity of precipitation. She resides in Riva, MD.
