Gambrills Schools Wins $10K from BGE Contest

Baltimore Gas and Electric, Maryland’s largest power and company, announced the winner of their elementary school contest to design its gas safety hero. His name? Captain Mercaptan.

The School of the Incarnation of Gambrills won the $10,000 grand prize of the contest, which featured the designs of elementary school students from throughout the Baltimore area working on designing the new face of the power company.

“Everyone at BGE extends our thanks to the many students across central Maryland who demonstrated their creativity and understanding of natural gas,” BG&E gas distribution vice president Robert Biagiotti said in press release.

Sixty-six designs of Captain Mercaptan were submitted in time for a public vote in April, where over 36,000 votes were cast on a website where voters could decide their favorite designs.

In addition to the top prize, BG&E awarded schools $5,000 prizes per grade level. The winners were another award for the Incarnation school in kindergarten, Emmorton Elementary School of Bel Air for first grade, Jacobsville Elementary School of Pasadena for second grade, Windsor Farm Elementary School of Annapolis for third grade, and St. John Catholic School of Westminster for fourth grade.
