Girls Basketball: Seahawks Preparing for Postseason Run

For the past two seasons, the South River High girls basketball season has come to an end the same way—with a loss to North Point in the region finals.

This year, the Seahawks (20-3) will look to avenge those loses—but to get there they will first have to tackle some county opponents.

South River is fresh off a victory over Arundel in the county championship game and has earned a first round bye along with a No. 2 seed in the Class 4A girls basketball tournament. The team will face the winner of the Meade-Broadneck game on Tuesday in the second round of the tournament.

"It’s tough because you have to be ready for both teams so you are basically prepping for two opponents," said six-year coach Mike Zivic.

During the regular season, South River defeated Broadneck twice and beat Meade the only time the two faced. Zivic said this year's squad has been successful thanks in large part to senior leadership and a deep bench.

"All four of our seniors are playing at their highest levels and our bench has been giving us quality minutes," Zivic said. "In all of our games this year, every kid has played."

Zivic said he hopes the experience the players have gained in every game has helped prepare them for postseason play.

Despite the fact that a potential third matchup with North Point weighs heavy on the team's mind, Zivic said it would be a mistake to look past the first few games.

"We have to get there first and the teams in our way are not going to want that to happen," Zivic said. "Broadneck and Meade aren’t going to lie over on us. We have to win those games first before we start thinking about North Point."

Senior Tiffany McKinney knows what ending your season with a loss to North Point feels like, but still she said its important for her and the rest of the team to stay focused on the upcoming opponent.

"We are really focused on taking it one day at a time," McKinney said. "We are all hoping to get North Point again but we are focused on the opponents we have coming up next."

South River will face the winner of Meade and Broadneck on Monday in Edgewater. If they win that game they will most likely face Arundel next before heading to the region finals.

"Since this is our last year I want [the younger girls] to know how it feels to be so close to winning states," McKinney said. "I want them to have the same passion to want to win states so bad. It would be our first state title so I want them to know how it feels and go out and play hard."
