Girls Basketball: Seahawks Set for North County Rematch

The South River girls basketball team defeated Leonardtown Wednesday night.

The South River girls basketball team topped Leonardtown 46-26 Wednesday night to set up a region final battle against North Point for the third year in a row.

The No. 2 Seahwaks will battle No. 1 North Point on Friday evening in a scene that is all too familiar to the team.

"We lost to North Point in regional final the last two years," South River coach Mike Zivic said.

The Seahawks are coming off a successful season with a 22-3 record and a victory over Arundel in the county championship game. But a win over North Point still stands between the team and a berth into the regional championship game.

Last week, senior Tiffany McKinney told Patch she knows how it feels to end the season with a lost to North Point, and doesn't want the younger members of the team to know that feeling.

"Since this is our last year I want [the younger girls] to know how it feels to be so close to winning states," McKinney said. "I want them to have the same passion to want to win states so bad. It would be our first state title so I want them to know how it feels and go out and play hard."

The South River - North Point rematch will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Friday night at North Point High School.
