Girls Basketball: South River Advances in Postseason Play

South River High's girls basketball team defeated Broadneck 51-40 Monday night.

The South River girls basketball team took one step closer to a state title Monday night, when it defeated Broadneck in the second round of the MPSSAA Class 4A state basketball playoffs.

The No. 2 Seahawks (21-3) topped No. 7 Broadneck 51-40 and will now face Leonardtown on Wednesday night.

For the past two seasons, South River's season has come to an end with a loss to North Point in the region finals. North Point will face Severna Park High on Wednesday.

If both South River and North Point win on Wednesday, the two teams will once again face off in the region finals on March 1 or 2.

Last week, senior Tiffany McKinney told Patch that while the North Point game is heavy on the teams' mind, it's important they take it one game at a time.

"We are really focused on taking it one day at a time," McKinney said. "We are all hoping to get North Point again but we are focused on the opponents we have coming up next."

The Seahawks will tip off against Leonardtown at 6 p.m. Wednesday night at South River High School.
