GOP Candidate Tweets Pledge to Build Crofton High School

A message on Twitter by a Republican gubernatorial candidate pledging to build a high school in Crofton has social media buzzing.

David Craig, the Harford County executive, tweeted last week, “I will fully fund the construction of a high school in Crofton.”

He then asked two fellow gubernatorial candidates, Republican Larry Hogan and Democrat Heather Mizeur, if they would also commit to funding the project, reports the Capital-Gazette.

Another tweet posed the same question to Democratic candidates Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler.

“I have built 7 schools in Harford County,” Craig tweeted March 28. “I will build #crofton high school. We need to preserve neighborhoods not divide.”

The Build Crofton High School group is lobbying for a high school to be built in Crofton. Supporters say it will ease overcrowding at other schools, including Arundel and South River, and united the community’s estimated1,400 high school students who are split between high schools.

Craig’s campaign Twitter account reinforced the message today, tweeting: “I will fund the @buildcroftonhs. I built 7 schools as the Harford County Exec without raising taxes. I will get it done as governor.”

A county bill, scheduled to be introduced by Councilman Jamie Benoit, D-Crownsville, during the Monday meeting, would create a fund to start shrinking the county’s $1 billion backlog of capital projects, beginning with a Crofton high school, the Capital-Gazette reports.

Benoit said he will eventually introduce a measure to raise county income tax rates to pay for the high school.

His plans have gained support on the Build Crofton High School Facebook page, followed by roughly 1,100 residents.

Craig also tweeted that, as governor, he would fully fund the $125 million Severna Park High School construction project.
