Maxwell Returns 'Home' to Prince George's County

The soon-to-be CEO of Prince George's County Schools introduced himself to the community Friday.

Kevin Maxwell said the decision to accept the leadership position at Prince George’s County Public Schools came quickly and was not necessarily part of his long-term career plan, but that he ultimately was struck by the level of enthusiasm presented by the county leadership.

Maxwell, who resigned this week as superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, said he was first approached by Prince George’s County officials at the beginning of the month and was named CEO of schools this week following a fast-moving selection process.

“I did not put myself forward to be considered in that first process,” he said. Nevertheless, Maxwell had a celebratory tone Friday in his first public remarks before Prince George’s County leaders, who touted his experience as a former student, teacher and administrator in the county.

“This is my home,” he said during a press conference at Northwest High School in Hyattsville. “This absolutely my home. I never left here because it is my home.”

Maxwell, who joined Anne Arundel County Public Schools in 2006, said he was proud of the academic progress made during his tenure, pointing to the record $127 million in scholarship offers for seniors, up from $36 million in his first year.

He also touted the creation of magnet and signature programs at all high schools, the development of connections with the business community, and the school system’s environmental education programs.

"I had great staff, great executive team, great principals and great teachers,” he said. “They'll continue to serve Anne Arundel County well."

Maxwell said he hopes to finalize negotiations with Prince George’s County by August. In the meantime, he is also negotiating with Anne Arundel County on a final date of employment.
