Robotics Group Raises Funds and ‘STEM’ Awareness at Chick-fil-A

A group of home school students demonstrated their engineering skills Tuesday night at the Chick-fil-A at the village at Waugh Chapel. The students are raising money to compete in two upcoming robotics contest.

Members of the St. Pete the Rock Home School Tutorial program held a fall fundraiser Tuesday night at the Waugh Chapel Chick-fil-A.

The student’s math tutor and team coach Aileen Hahne said the engineering team is comprised of home-schooled students from the Bowie and Greater Annapolis area. 

The team focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics or “STEM” projects.

The St. Pete the Rock team competes in “FIRST Tech Challenge. They are high school students who use Lego Mindstorms and TETRIX kits to built robotic sports models for competition.

Hahne said the funds raised at the Chick-fil-A event would help the young scientists participate in a competition Dec. 3 at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata. The team also hopes to compete in the Jan. 14 event at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
