Superintendent Maxwell: ‘Educational and Economic Challenges Face New Teachers’

Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell spoke with Patch about the educational and economic challenges facing educators in 2011.

More than 300 new Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) teachers are gearing up for the 2011-2012 academic year.

On Monday, AACPS Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell addressed new teachers at Arundel High School. Dr. Maxwell said there are two major challenges he wants teachers to focus on this year:

  • Closing the academic achievement gap
  • Finding innovative ways to work with students whose parents may not be working during the economic downturn

AACPS will hold a Back-to-School Expo on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. According to the school system’s website, AACPS employees will conduct learning activities and distribute backpacks and school supplies to students.
