Beckerman, Salt Lake Fall in MLS Title Game

The Crofton native recorded an assist in the game, which was played to a 1-1 draw for 120 minutes before Sporting KC won on penalty kicks.

Crofton native Kyle Beckerman took part in one of the most memorable matches in the history of Major League Soccer on Saturday, as Sporting KC topped Real Salt Lake to capture the league's championship.

Beckerman, a forward for Real Salt Lake, was on the losing end of the match, which was played to a 1-1 draw before Sporting KC won 7-6 on penalty kicks.

The game, played with temperatures in the teens, was the longest in MLS playoff history. Beckerman played all 120 minutes of regulation and made one penalty kick.

Beckerman recorded an assist in the game when he helped Alvaro Saborio score in the 52nd minute. But Sporting KC would tie the game in the 76th minute.

MLSSoccer.com gave Beckerman a second-place ranking in its "Men of the Match" list, noting that he "bossed the midfield" and "sent a perfect pass" on the assist to Saborio.

Beckerman, a midfielder, attended Arundel High School before leaving the area to join an elite soccer training program. He has recently been an integral part of the US Men's National Team and will likely be a candidate to play in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in June.
