Lacrosse: South River Boys Slip Past Arundel, 8-7

South River edged its local rival Arundel, 8-7, to remain undefeated in county play.

The secret to the success of the South River boys lacrosse has never been about one individual player. It's not about coach Paul Noone either.

It's about the team.

A team win is exactly what the Seahawks demonstrated in coming back to defeat local rival Arundel High, 8-7, on a breezy Friday evening in Gambrills.

"It's a team win. That's all it is," Noone said. "It has nothing to do with me. It has nothing to do with anybody here. Everybody as one. They pulled together, showed a little heart [and] came out of here with a [win]. That's what we needed."

In the first half, it appeared as if Arundel senior Hunter Cetrone would will the host Wildcats to a victory over South River.

Cetrone scored Arundel's first four goals, as the Wildcats held a 5-3 advantage at halftime. Cetrone's third goal, which game at the 9:33 mark of the second quarter, was the 100th in his Wildcat lacrosse career.

"I think Hunter is one of the best players in Anne Arundel county. I think he's maybe one of the best players in our school's history. He scored his 100th goal tonight. He's a very good player. He's been a pleasure to coach for all four years. These are the kind of games he lives for," Arundel coach Kevin Necessary said about his senior midfielder.

The two sides exchanged a pair of quick goals as the second half began, as Arundel led 6-4 early in the third quarter.

Having struggled to beat Arundel goalie Andrew Jones for much of the game, the Seahawk attack came to life in the third quarter. Consecutive goals by D.J. Davis, Matthew Gaskins and Brandon Senft put South River ahead for the first time since early in the first quarter.

"I like to think that if we keep shooting, sooner or later, something has got to go. [Jones] played a nice game. We weren't placing a lot of shots early," Noone said.

Jones, a sophomore, finished with a game-high 15 saves for the Wildcats.

Cameron Cetrone would equalize for Arundel just over a minute into the final quarter. Though the tie would not last long as Davis tallied his second goal of the game and the game winner with 8:12 left to play.

"Give them a lot of credit. It's a good team down here. We're lucky to get out of here with [a win]," Noone said.

South River will now host Severna Park on Tuesday, while Arundel will travel to Chesapeake.
