Broadneck Washes Out Wildcats Boys Soccer, 1-0, in Overtime

The Arundel boys, who didn't fall to a county opponent last year, falls to 2-2 after an overtime loss to Broadneck. The Lady Wildcats lost, 3-1, to Broadneck in the early game. Carley Keer was the goal scorer for Arundel.

The Arundel High boy's soccer team (2-2) suffered another difficult defeat on Thursday, dropping a 1-0 decision in overtime to Broadneck (4-0).

Eighty-six minutes of scoreless soccer played before the Bruins' Loic Barret struck a close-range goal to win it.

"You always know what you're going to get whenever you play Broadneck," Arundel coach Mike McCarron said.

Two squads boasting a similar make-up: good goalkeeper, solid defense along with a talented and posssesion-oriented midfield. The only issue is each team lacks a true goal-scoring forward.

"Broadneck is an incredible side," Arundel goalie Tyler Wilson said. "I knew it was going to be difficult for us to put away our chances and it was."

A resilient Bruins squad continued to threaten the Wildcat defense until Barret's late winner.

"We work hard until the end whistle," Barret said about his team's mentality.

The Bruins' best opportunities in the first half came from an unlikely canidate. Senior defender David Keen hit a pair of free kicks over the cross bar to give Arundel a scare.

In a span of less than two minutes, the Wildcats earned two corner kicks, and nearly scored off both. Max Conant's header went wide of the goal, followed by Logan McCarron's header that bounced straight to the goalkeeper.

The two sides went to halftime still searching for a goal.

Broadneck began the second half with another test for Wilson. Barret fired a shot directed at the keeper, who made the save.

Later, Broadneck's Brandon Hanger header was batted down by Wilson. Henry Welsh then let loose a long-range shot for the Bruins that was tipped over the crossbar.

With no one able to score, the game headed for sudden-death overtime.

During the first overtime period, a Broadneck throw-in found its way to freshman Tyler Gabbara, whose shot was stopped and landed at the feet of Barret. The senior forward struck a low, hard shot back across the goal to secure the victory.

"Obviously, we're feeling a little down on ourselves," Wilson said. "We gave up the goal in extra time. That's never a good way to lose."

The Wildcats return to action this weekend with a tournament at North County, before a Monday game hosting Southern.

Lady Wildcats Fall, 3-1, to Broadneck

Senior Carley Keer pulled back a goal late for Arundel, but it wasn't enough as the Arundel High girl's soccer team fell, 3-1, on Thursday.

Broadneck's Sammy Dean scored on a first-half penalty kick and then again in the second half. Arden Smith added a second-half goal as well, before Keer's second-half strike.

Dean's penalty kick seemed to deflate the Lady Wildcats, who appeared evenly matched early on. Keer's goal highlighted a late charge by Arundel, who couldn't muster a second goal.

"We might have lost but the start and the finish I think show what can we can end up being," Keer said.

A foul in the box by Arundel allowed Dean a chance to convert from the spot. She stepped up and calmly placed a hard shot to the low left corner, giving the Lady Bruins a 1-0 advantage.

"I thought we played really hard. Arundel is definitely a really good team. We came out determined to 'stick it to them' and we played hard the entire time," Dean said.

Smith would double the Bruin lead when she cleaned up a deflected shot and placed it in the back of the net, as the first half neared its end.

Midfielder Clarrisa Kirsch-Downs played well for the Wildcats, but couldn't direct her side to a goal.

With 17 minutes to play in the second half, Broadneck's Emily Lord took a dribble run down the left side of the field. She cut back on her defender before heading towards goal, where she dropped off a square pass to Dean for the 3-0 lead.

Frantic to draw the score closer, Arundel kicked up the intensity and capitalized on the Keer goal.

"We can only get better from here," Keer said.

The Lady Wildcats looked strong toward the end, but was unable to put together the complete game.

"I don't expect us to see us lose another game the rest of the season. In fact I guarentee that," Arundel head coach Laura Coe.

The Lady Wildcats will host Southern High on Monday, with that game slated to kick-off at 7 p.m.
